Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson Regretted Playing Peeta Mellark
Josh Hutcherson recently opened up about his feelings towards the Hunger Games franchise. The actor played Peeta Mellark in the sci-fi film series, appearing alongside co-stars Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, who portrayed Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne, respectively. Hutcherson spoke about the fame the franchise brought him and how his feelings towards the role turned resentful.
Josh Hutcherson has been ‘spiteful’ towards his Hunger Games role
Josh Hutcherson recently spoke with Collider in New York City while promoting his upcoming film, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Along with noting that the second installment of the franchise is much scarier, he also opened up about his role in The Hunger Games.
When asked about whether he ever resented playing Peeta, Hutcherson responded, “A hundred percent. I never had the thought of ‘I wish I didn’t do Hunger Games.'” However, he added that he “recognized how important the movies were and how great they were and how amazing it was to be a part of it.”
Further, he explained why he felt that way, mentioning what he gained and lost as a result of playing Peeta in the franchise. “There were definitely times where I was spiteful towards it because of the fame, the attention. I didn’t want any of that. I genuinely, to this day, don’t want it,” Hutcherson shared. The Beekeeper actor then explained how he couldn’t even get out of his house and went through a phase of resenting the industry for it, saying, “It was hardcore.”
His final Hunger Games film, Mockingjay: Part II, came out in 2015, and post that, Hutcherson explained he had to face rejection for the first time in his life. “There weren’t a lot of projects coming my way. I was auditioning, but not getting cast. Now I’m tasting rejection, and I’m 27 years old. I’ve never tasted that before,” he shared.
