Well Go USA Entertainment announced that they have acquired the U.S. rights to Youngblood, and will release a new movie that’s set to premiere in theaters on March 6, 2026. The new movie will come from Academy Award nominee Hubert Davis (The Well), and will be produced by Aircraft Pictures in association with Dolphin Entertainment and Photon Films and Media.
Originally released in 1986, Youngblood follows the story of hockey prodigy Dean Youngblood, who tries out for a Canadian junior hockey team, and has run ins with dirty players on the team as he tries to make his way in the sport. The new adaptation will still follow Youngblood, who “travels from Detroit to Canada to join the Hamilton Mustangs in pursuit of his professional hockey dreams. Raised on a strict diet of toughness and discipline by his father, Dean arrives with undeniable talent – and an arrogance that quickly earns him enemies. As he confronts toxic behavior both on the ice and within himself, Dean is forced to decide what kind of man and player he wants to become.”
“We’re excited to introduce Youngblood to a new generation of viewers,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO at Well Go USA. “Dean Youngblood’s journey is more than a classic sports story; it is a powerful examination of courage, identity, and the pressures that shape us. The film blends electrifying on-ice action with heartfelt character heroism, taking the audience on an emotional ride. It’s an inspiring, adrenaline-charged story that stays with you long after the final buzzer.”
The new version of Youngblood will star Ashton James in the role of Dean Youngblood, and will also star Blair Underwood, Shawn Doyle, Alexandra McDonald, Henri Picard, Donald MacLean Jr., Olunike Adeliyi, Emidio Lopes, and Tamara Podemski.
The film was adapted by screenwriters Josh Epstein, Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron, and the late Charles Officer. Bill O’Dowd, Emerson Davis, Allan Fung, Mark Slone, and Zanne Devine serve as executive producers. Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen both produce the film.
The film will also include footage made in collaboration with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, and was made in collaboration with hockey technical advisor Christopher V. Nelson, who choreographed the film’s on-ice action.
