George Clooney recently reflected on his first film role in Grizzly II: Revenge, calling it “just a disaster.” Speaking to ScreenRant, Clooney said, “I was 22 years old, and I thought, ‘Hey, man, this is going to be great!’” He added, “It was my first gig, so I was just happy to have a job. Then we were stuck in Budapest, they ran out of money and left us there.”
André Szöts directed the film and began shooting it in 1983, but financial issues halted its completion. It remained unreleased until 2021, when producers completed the film, leveraging Clooney’s later fame. The final product, released on VOD, included stock footage to fill gaps. Clooney commented, “They cut it with all this stock footage of bears and things. It was just a disaster.”
Grizzly II: Revenge currently holds an 8% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Clooney’s lowest-rated films. Despite the poor reception, the film featured an ensemble cast, including Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, Louise Fletcher, John Rhys-Davies, and an uncredited Timothy Spall.
Clooney recalled sharing a laugh with Dern about the experience: “Laura and I were laughing about this the other day, saying, ‘We’re getting bad reviews for something we did 40 years ago.’” He added, “Laura was like 15, we get killed in the opening scene, and it’s like ‘Starring Laura and George!’”
Clooney and Dern reunite in the 2023 film Jay Kelly, joining Adam Sandler, Greta Gerwig, Riley Keough, Isla Fisher, Eve Hewson, Patrick Wilson, and Stacy Keach. Jay Kelly holds a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film began its limited theatrical release on November 14 and will premiere on Netflix on December 5.
