Zootopia 2 Box Office Start Is 2nd-Highest in Disney Animated History
Zootopia 2 is out in theaters now, and if early box office returns are any indication, the latest Disney animated feature is going to be a big hit for the company.
What is Zootopia 2’s box office looking like?
According to a recent report from Deadline on the early openings for Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good, the second Zootopia movie brought in $10.2 million during its preview day on Tuesday. That’s a standout mark for Disney, and would be the second-highest preview start for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film in its history, only behind 2024’s Moana 2 ($13.8m).
In terms of all-time opening previews for an animated film, Zootopia would still slot into the top 10, coming in at eighth all time. The Incredibles 2 holds the record for highest opening preview, drawing a massive $18.5 million on its Thursday premiere. With an already strong start, Zootopia 2’s box office looks poised to continue climbing.
Early projections had the film at around $125 million in its first week, but now reports suggest that could climb. Should it hit its initial marks, though, the film would once again be the second-biggest five-day opening over the Thanksgiving holiday since Moana 2. In terms of global earnings, Zootopia 2 is now projected to earn around $270 million.
“After cracking the biggest case in Zootopia’s history, rookie cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde find their partnership isn’t as solid as they thought when Chief Bogo orders them to join the Partners in Crisis counseling program. But it doesn’t take long for their partnership to be put to the ultimate test when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mystery tied to the arrival of a venomous snake in the animal metropolis,” reads the official synopsis.
Encanto filmmakers Jared Bush and Byron Howard co-directed Zootopia 2, with Bush also writing the screenplay and Yvett Merino producing the movie. The sequel will also feature the return of Shakira as Gazelle, Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Bonnie Hunt as Bonnie Hopps, Don Lake as Stu Hopps, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellwether, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, Maurice LaMarche as Mr. Big, Leah Latham as Fru Fru, Josh Dallas as Frantic Pig, Tommy Chong as Yax, and Mark Smith as Officer McHorn.
