Avatar 3 Box Office Tracking Is Behind The Way of Water’s

The opening weekend box office predictions for Avatar 3 have arrived.

20th Century Studios’ Avatar 3, also known as Avatar: Fire and Ash, arrives in United States theaters next month. Directed by James Cameron, the sci-fi fantasy sequel film once again sees Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri.

How much is Avatar 3 expected to make during its opening weekend?

Per Deadline, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to make $110 million, or somewhere in the $100 million to $130 million range, during its opening weekend at the domestic box office.

“It’s behind the first tracking first choice numbers of Avatar: The Way of Water, which opened to $134.1M, and that’s just fine,” the article notes. “Note, unlike most Marvel Studios movies, Avatar movies are appointment viewing. Audiences seek out the best 3D, IMAX, and premium large-format seats. There are no Easter Eggs going on a la a Marvel movie, which require immediate viewing by fans…When we’re talking about the opening for Avatar: Fire and Ash, consider Avatar: Way of Water‘s domestic start essentially the ceiling in regards to a first weekend comp.”

The first Avatar movie, meanwhile, made around $77 million during its opening weekend. It ended up making $2.9 billion in total, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar: The Way of Water, which is the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, finished its box office run at $2.3 billion.

As far as 2025 movies go, if Avatar: Fire and Ash makes $110 million opening weekend, this puts it behind the opening weekend for A Minecraft Movie ($162 million), Lilo & Stitch ($146 million), Superman ($125 million), The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($117 million), and Wicked: For Good ($147 million). Jurassic World Rebirth opened on a Wednesday and made $147.8 million over the five-day weekend, though its three-day Friday to Sunday total stands at $92 million.

Avatar 3 will be released on December 19, 2025.
