Knives Out 4 & More Sequels Could Happen on 1 Condition
The Knives Out film series can potentially continue beyond the new third movie under one condition. Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed all three films, recently detailed his uncompromising stance on Knives Out 4 and beyond.
Rian Johnson says only he can make Knives Out 4 and more sequels
Johnson stated in a recent interview with Variety that he doesn’t want anyone else to write or direct a Knives Out movie. “I don’t see it as IP,” he explained. “Each Knives Out film is something I want to make. If that stops being the case, we won’t do another one.”
It comes after Johnson expressed interest in making another Knives Out movie with Daniel Craig, who portrays Detective Benoit Blanc in the films. “Creatively, I feel energized after making this one,” the filmmaker said. “Daniel and I are already starting to formulate . . . what could the next one be if we do another one?”
Johnson also added that he didn’t know why the creative team behind the movies would stop making them if they could keep going, indicating a deep affection for the projects.
This isn’t the first time Johnson has said that no Knives Out movie will be made without him or Craig. When asked if he would let another filmmaker helm a Knives Out film, Johnson said, “Absolutely not. It’s mine. They’ll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands. Similarly, if Daniel stops having fun or decides he doesn’t want to do it anymore, then, as far as I’m concerned, the series is over.” (via Forbes)
The first movie, Knives Out, came out in 2019. The second, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was released in 2022. The third movie in the series, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, had its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2025. The film releases in select US theaters today, November 26. It will start streaming on Netflix on December 12, 2025.
