Wicked 3 Gets Exciting Update From Universal

It’s seeming more and more likely that Wicked 3 will happen.

Wicked: For Good is now playing in United States theaters. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the fantasy movie is a sequel to 2024’s Wicked, as it adapts the second half of the popular stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. That musical is loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which itself is a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. That book was famously turned into the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland.

What is the Wicked 3 update?

While Wicked: For Good may seem like the natural end of the Wicked movies given that the whole musical has now been adapted, Universal Pictures’ chief marketing officer Michael Moses told Vulture that they’re actively looking at how they can continue the franchise.

“Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe,” Moses said. “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”

Schwartz provided a similar answer after he was asked about a potential Wicked 3 when speaking to The Ankler. He said, “What I will tell you without giving away too much is that Winnie Holzman (the original Wicked book writer and film’s co-screenwriter) and I are doing some work right now on ideas that aren’t a sequel to Wicked, because I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete — but there are other aspects that could be explored. Gregory Maguire, the original Wicked novelist, has several books, for example. But there’s another idea that Winnie and I are discussing: not a sequel, but an adjunct. Let me put it that way.”

At this time, Paramount Pictures has not officially greenlit Wicked 3 or any other Oz-related projects.
