Man of Tomorrow: James Gunn Gives Encouraging Update on Superman’s Next DCU Movie

James Gunn has revealed how much of Man of Tomorrow is already storyboarded.

Man of Tomorrow is the forthcoming DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures superhero movie that serves as a follow-up to 2025’s Superman. Directed by Gunn, the film will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor.

What did James Gunn say about Man of Tomorrow?

After recently sharing a picture on Threads of some Man of Tomorrow storyboards, Gunn revealed in a post that “a huge chunk but not most” of the upcoming DCU movie has been storyboarded at this point in time.

When asked to explain what happens with the storyboards once they’re complete, Gunn said, “Storyboards and the accompanying shot lists go to the department heads and anyone who needs to have them. They’re the Bible as much as the script is. Then we have large group meetings where we project and go through every shot and what it will need to accomplish the shot. Sometimes for a big action scene we’ll do that many times. For a smaller more simple scene, often just once.”

Gunn also explained when questioned about how accurately a finished movie reflects what the storyboard covers, “I always have flexibility and improve on art. But they’re very very specific (especially the shot descriptions for each of these storyboards), so we always have a distinct starting place.”

While Gunn has yet to comment on the matter, The Wrap recently reported that the main antagonist who will be featured in Man of Tomorrow will be Brainiac. It is also known that Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. in the film, while further plot details remain under wraps at this time.

Man of Tomorrow will be released in United States theaters on July 9, 2027. Superman, meanwhile, is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
