Jungle Cruise 2 Update From Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt Is Bad News

Will there be a Jungle Cruise sequel? The latest update from Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt is disappointing news for the status of Jungle Cruise 2.

What is the latest Jungle Cruise 2 update?

In August 2021, it was reported that Jungle Cruise 2 was in development, with Johnson and Blunt set to reprise their roles. Since then, the film has remained in development, with no updates on casting or a filming start date.

Speaking to Gerrad Hall on The Awardist podcast, Johnson and Blunt discussed a Jungle Cruise sequel and the chances of it happening in the future. Unfortunately for fans of the first film, Johnson and Blunt are unlikely to set sail again.

“I don’t think so,” Johnson and Blunt said when asked if Jungle Cruise 2 will happen. Johnson cited the pandemic as a reason for the sequel’s downfall.

“I think when Disney came under new leadership, they just shifted coming out of COVID,” Johnson explained. “COVID shifted our business in a lot of ways. I think they looked at that property and thought, we did it once, not sure if we should revisit it again. Despite whether or not our chemistry was great.”

Based on the Disney theme park attraction, Jungle Cruise is an adventure film starring Johnson as Frank Wolff, a ship captain hired by Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt) to guide her down the Amazon River in search of the Tree of Life. Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti also star.

Jaume Collet-Serra directed Jungle Cruise from a screenplay by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Michael Green. Producers include Johnson, John Davis, John Fox, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.

Jungle Cruise was released day-and-date in theaters and digitally on July 30, 2021. Jungle Cruise became a box-office disappointment, with a worldwide gross of $221 million against a budget of $200 million.
