Brendan Fraser Slams Batgirl’s Cancellation: ‘More Valuable to Burn It Down’

Brendan Fraser recently opened up about the state of the film industry, touching on the abrupt cancellation of Batgirl and the broader issues facing Hollywood. In a new interview, the actor reflected on industry trends, shifting priorities, and the impact of shelving completed projects. His remarks come as he continues to explore new roles, including his latest performance in the Japan-set drama Rental Family.

Brendan Fraser shines light on industry’s state after Batgirl cancellation

Brendan Fraser addressed the state of the film industry following the cancellation of Batgirl, in an interview with the Associated Press. “A whole movie,” Fraser said. “There were four floors of production in Glasgow. I was sneaking into the art department just to geek out.”

He criticized the industry’s direction: “The product — I’m sorry, ‘content’ — is being commodified to the extent that it’s more valuable to burn it down and get the insurance on it than to give it a shot in the marketplace.” He also noted the impact on audiences, stating, “There’s a generation of little girls who don’t have a heroine to look up to and go, ‘She looks like me.’”

Fraser added, “With respect, we could blight itself,” expressing concern over the growing influence of financial considerations over storytelling. He linked these issues to broader industry challenges, including the effects of AI and changing business models. “We’re still chopping our way through the tall grass of AI and all this stuff. The industry needs a real B-12 or something.”

Following his Oscar win for The Whale, Fraser took on the lead role in Rental Family, portraying a failed actor hired to play family roles in people’s lives. “Honestly, I was kind of floating during that whole time without an agent,” he said. “I ended up: What is a rental family? Which dog do you like at the pound? I like the one with four teeth and one tweaky eye.”

Fraser said acting is “straight up” a service industry. “Service rendered, payment received. Rules and boundaries.” While filming in Tokyo, he visited animal cafés, including one where he rented a hedgehog. “They give you gardening gloves and a ticket for two drinks from the vending machine. You can sit there and play with these sticky guys.”
