Weapons Prequel on Aunt Gladys Gets Promising Update From Zach Cregger

Weapons director Zach Cregger recently offered a brief update on the future of his expanding horror universe, including the status of a potential Aunt Gladys prequel. In a new podcast interview, he discussed ongoing development conversations and the project’s place within the world he has built. He also addressed how the prequel connects to his earlier work.

What did Zach Cregger say about the Aunt Gladys prequel?

Zach Cregger said in Deadline’s Crew Call podcast interview that the Aunt Gladys prequel is still in development and remains an idea he is actively exploring.

He noted that the spin-off stays connected to the world built around Amy Madigan’s character. Cregger acknowledged ongoing conversations about the project and indicated that the concept is active but not yet in production. “We’re still kind of in the deal-making process, so I don’t think there’s much that I am allowed to say at this point, but… the story is what I am pretty excited about,” he stated.

During the same interview, Cregger described Weapons as “a very personal movie.” He said, “Weapons is autobiographical in a lot of ways.” Cregger explained that “the Alex chapter, the final chapter,” reflects his experiences growing up in a household affected by addiction.

Cregger stated, “I know what it is like to live in a house where a foreign substance comes into my house and turns my father into a different person, and I know what it is like to go to school and act like nothing’s wrong, and then come home and have a scary, scary house with a dad I do not recognize.” He added that he was prompted to write Weapons during post-production on Barbarian after a best friend died tragically.

The filmmaker also discussed the early days of Barbarian, including making it “by the seat of his pants” for 4.5 million dollars and recalling that the financing came together at the last minute, saying, “I aged ten years in that weekend.” He talked about assembling the Weapons cast after the strikes and securing Amy Madigan for Gladys. He also discussed developing his next film for Resident Evil, noting, “I have never seen a Resident Evil movie.”

Notably, Weapons cost a net 38 million dollars to make, and it grossed over 268 million dollars worldwide.
