Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella Movie Gets New Details From Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright is currently celebrating the release of his adaptation of The Running Man, but recently opened up about his in-development Barbarella movie starring Sydney Sweeney.

What did Edgar Wright say about his Barbarella movie with Sydney Sweeney?

Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Wright wouldn’t go so far as to reveal whether or not Barbarella was his next movie. However, he did speak about how he might go about adapting the legendary comic series.

“I think if that did happen, it would be more [of an adaptation of the source material],” Wright said. “I love the original, and I probably watched that at exactly the right age: too young. The script is by Terry Southern, though you can feel the Terry Southern-ess of it start to . . . there’s a lot of that in there, and when it’s really sharp, it’s great. It’s beautiful to look at, and it’s fun and subversive.”

“The books themselves are just beautiful and really imaginative and progressive,” Wright continued. “I like the movies of that era. They’re all Italian movies that have that pop art sensibility.”

Created by Jean-Claude Forest, Barbarella originally debuted in the French V Magazine. In 1964, Éric Losfeld published the strips as a standalone book. In 1968, a sci-fi film was made, directed by Roger Vadim and written by Terry Southern, Vadim, Claude Brulé, Vittorio Bonicelli, Clement Biddle Wood, Brian Degas, Tudor Gates, and Jean-Claude Forest.

Wright’s version of the film has been in the works for some years now. It’s unclear who else might be starring in the movie, or whether or not any substantial updates have been made on it just yet.the film

The original film starred Jane Fonda as the titular character, a space traveler and representative of the U.S. who goes after a scientist looking to create a weapon to destroy humanity.
