Iconic Ghostbusters Cameo Is Canon to Franchise, Dan Aykroyd Explains
Ghostbusters vet Dan Aykroyd recalled his cameo appearance in 1995’s iconic horror comedy movie Casper, in which he reprised his role as Dr. Ray Stantz.
During a recent interview on the Talking Strange podcast, Aykroyd confirmed that his Casper cameo was definitely canon to the Ghostbusters franchise. He also revealed that it was actually acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who asked him to appear in the 1995 movie. Spielberg served as an executive producer on Casper through his Amblin Entertainment banner.
“I think so, given the fact that Spielberg asked for me and said, ‘Come and do this,’ and that they built me in there,” Aykroyd shared. “Of course, it’s a beautiful nod to what we were doing with Ivan [Reitman] and everybody. I think you gotta include there in the canon, no doubt.”
What happened in Dan Aykroyd’s Casper cameo?
At the beginning of the 1995 movie Casper, Aykroyd briefly appeared as his Ghostbusters character, Ray Stantz, who was one of the paranormal experts that the movie’s main villains enlisted to get rid of the mischievous ghosts inhabiting the Whipstaff Manor in Maine. However, his Ghostbusting experience was hilariously no match for the Ghostly Trio of Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso.
The movie was directed by Brad Silberling (A Series of Unfortunate Events, City of Angels) in his feature directorial debut. It was based on the iconic cartoon character created by Harvey Comics. The cast featured Bill Pullman (Independence Day) as Dr. Harvey, Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) as Kat, Brad Garrett (Finding Nemo), Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull), Eric Idle (Monty Python), Ben Stein (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), and Devon Sawa (Final Destination), with Malachi Pearson, Joe Nipote, Joe Alasky, and Garrett providing the respective voices of Casper, Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso. Besides Aykroyd, it also featured cameos from Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, and Rodney Dangerfield.
