Minka Kelly & Tom Wozniczka Talk Netflix’s Hilarious Christmas Movie Champagne Problems | Interview
ComingSoon spoke with Champagne Problems stars Minka Kelly and Tom Wozniczka about the new Netflix movie. The duo discussed their characters in the Christmas film, their incredible ensemble cast, and more. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
“Sydney Price (Minka Kelly) is a determined emerging executive who finally gets her chance to lead a major acquisition for Chateau Cassell, a beloved champagne house nestled in the heart of the Champagne region. When she hears she has been summoned to France around Christmas as part of the negotiations, she arrives in the city of lights with a hopeful heart and ready to close the deal,” says the official description.
“Taking one night off to soak in the magic of Paris over the holidays, Sydney has an unexpectedly charming run-in with Henri Cassell (Tom Wozniczka), a stranger who turns one simple evening into something special. But her plans for a whirlwind romance are quickly upended when she discovers that this charming Parisian is the founder’s son of the very company she is hoping to acquire. Yet, even amidst the gentle competition set by Hugo Cassell (Thibault de Montalemert) for all the potential buyers at the family vineyard, Sydney and Henri find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other, realizing that their burgeoning feelings might be hard to keep bottled up.”
Tyler Treese: Minka, Sydney leaves such an impression on everybody that she meets in the film. But she really finds herself throughout it beyond a romance. This is just as much about personal growth. So what really appealed to you about Champagne Problems?
Minka Kelly: Thank you for mentioning that. That was a big part of what drew me to it. It was that her whole goal wasn’t to meet a guy. In fact, it was the opposite of her goal. And it just kind of happened.
And I think that’s sort of true to life, isn’t it? When you least expect it, you end up sort of meeting the love of your life sometimes. That’s the funny rub. Like they tell you, just stop looking for it and it’ll find you. That was one of my favorite parts about this: she had her own sort of life, her sister, and her own sort of world that she was focusing on, and then this guy shows up and throws everything off [laughs].
Tom Wozniczka: Sorry.
Yeah. Tom was just too charming throughout it.
Kelly: Exactly.
Tom, the initial meet-cute in the bookstore is just so romantic. They have a beautiful night in Paris. How is it filming those initial scenes? Because Henri and Sydney are just so cute together that I think viewers are gonna be rooting for them from the get-go.
Wozniczka: Thank you. It was great and special at the same time because when we filmed in the bookstore it was our first day of filming. So I’ve met with Minka before, but we didn’t know each other that well.
I think something magical happened. I think the connection… we had a connection immediately, and it was very easy. It’s so easy to play with Minka ’cause she can create chemistry with everything, I guess. So, it made me comfortable, happy, and confident for the rest of the movie. But yeah. I love the scenes in the bookstore as well.
Minka, they have such a fantastic ensemble cast for this film. Flula Borg is always so much fun, but he gives a real spin where he is very dour and dark, which was so fun. I wasn’t familiar with Sean Amsing that much, but he just blew me away in this. He’s hilarious. How was it playing off their very different energies throughout the film?
Minka Kelly: I’m so happy you mentioned them. It was so much fun, and the three of them together was so fun for me. Just kind of like the dynamic and the levity with all of it because all they’re doing all day is making jokes and coming up with skits and filming different funny skits, all of them. Every once in a while, they’d let me in on it, and I’d be like, “What about me, guys?”
So it was just really fun, and I think it sort of translated. You could feel the comfort with all of us because they were making me laugh all day long, just maybe like disarmed all of us, and we just all felt we were all on common ground, and we all felt like we were best buds, and we were so excited to do this every day.
That’s also what I love about it. Everyone is so different. Everyone has their own unique characteristic about them. And so there’s something for everyone to fall in love with. And I think that just made it all the more enjoyable to do.
Tom, watching all the Netflix Christmas movies already has me in that state of mind. So I wanted to ask if you had a favorite Christmas movie that you always go back and rewatch?
Tom Wozniczka: I love Love Actually, and like Minka, The Holiday.
Kelly: He’s stealing my favorite movies, and that’s okay. You can take them.
Wozniczka: They are?
Kelly: That’s my favorite. Yeah.
Wozniczka: And About Time. I love this movie.
Minka, there’s a great line in the movie that says, “Be a Kelly Clarkson song,” so what Kelly Clarkson song would you be?
Kelly: Oh gosh. You’re putting me on the spot to remember all her songs. “Stronger.” Is that the one I think is in the movie? I’ll take that one. I love all Kelly Clarkson songs. I think she’s incredible. Her voice is amazing. I love Kelly Clarkson. I’ll be any of her songs.
Thanks to Minka Kelly and Tom Wozniczka for taking the time to speak about Champagne Problems.
