Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Movie Getting a Very Limited-Time Follow-up

Greta Gerwig‘s blockbuster hit and critically acclaimed Barbie movie is officially coming to life in London through a limited immersive experience. The Barbie in BarbieLand pop-up event hails from Warner Bros. and Mattel, in collaboration with Secret Cinema and TodayTix. Secret Cinema was the production company behind the recent Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical experience.

“We’re beyond excited to bring Greta Gerwig’s brilliant Barbie The Movie, inspired by Mattel’s Barbie brand, to life in a way that only Secret Cinema can,” Secret Cinema and TodayTix executive Merritt Baer said in a statement. “In collaboration with Mattel and Warner Bros., we’re inviting audiences to step through the iconic pink doors of BarbieLand – to sing, dance, and celebrate together. It’s part-immersive experience, part-West End theatre and without a doubt, the best night out you’ll have all year.”

What do we know about Barbie in BarbieLand?

According to Deadline, the Barbie in BarbieLand experience is expected to launch next summer for eight weeks. It will feature theatrical performances and immersive sets for fans to experience the movie’s iconic BarbieLand sets. Fans will also be treated to a BarbieLand Carnival and dancefloors, as well as themed food and drinks.

The creative team behind the immersive experience will be announced at a later date, teasing the involvement of famous members from the West End, Broadway, and the music industry. The pre-sale sign-up for early access to tickets is now available online ahead of the general ticket sale in December.

The live-action Barbie movie was directed by Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. It was led and produced by Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie. She was joined by Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, and Kate McKinnon. During its theatrical run, it earned a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023. The film currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 506 reviews.

At the moment, Gerwig and Robbie have no plans to make a sequel. However, Mattel Studios is currently planning an animated Barbie movie, which won’t be connected with the 2023 movie. It is being produced by Illumination. This would mark the first time that a Barbie animated movie will be released in theaters.
