Project Hail Mary Directors on Why New Trailer Reveals [Spoiler], Promise More Surprises
Project Hail Mary directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller aren’t worried about the new trailer showing too much.
Project Hail Mary is the forthcoming sci-fi adventure movie that comes from Lord and Miller. With a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the movie is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir. It stars Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt, Milana Vayntrub as Olesya Ilyukhina, Ken Leung as Yáo Li-Jie, Lionel Boyce, and more.
What did Phil Lord and Chris Miller say about the Project Hail Mary trailer?
In a Reddit AMA, Lord and Miller were asked about why they decided to reveal Rocky, who is an alien, in the new Project Hail Mary trailer rather than keeping that surprise a secret until the movie is released next spring.
“You can’t tell this story without introducing Rocky, because the heart of the story is the relationship between him and Grace,” Miller answered. “As fans of the book, you know Rocky is the second lead of this movie. And what’s shown in the trailer is just a glimpse of what’s to come. Rocky is such a beautiful and “amaze-“ing character, and we were all very thoughtful about what to show and when.. You all know how much more there is to this story and relationship than what is shown in the trailer, and we’re excited for everyone to see where it goes!”
Responding to other questions, Lord said that Rocky will have a voice that fans are “going to love,” and “watching Rocky brought to life on set by lead puppeteer James Ortiz and the rest of the Rocketeers” was one of the coolest practical elements to film.
Project Hail Mary will be released in United States theaters on March 20, 2026, by Amazon MGM Studios.
