Wicked 2 Director Confirms if the Sequel Was Made Using AI

Wicked 2 director Jon M. Chu has clarified that no AI was used in the making of the upcoming sequel. Speaking about the film’s production process, Chu emphasized that every performance and visual detail was created through human effort. His comments arrive as anticipation builds for the second installment.

Jon M. Chu says no generative AI was used while making Wicked 2

Jon M. Chu has clarified that Wicked: For Good was created without the use of AI at any stage of production. The director addressed the matter directly, stating that the upcoming sequel completely followed the traditional filmmaking methods and creative processes.

In an interview with The Guardian, Chu proudly said, “Generative AI was not used on this movie.”  He pointed out that details such as camera movement, choreography, or small performance are entirely the result of human effort.

The director explained, “If you see the camera shake, if you see a dancer and they’re not quite on time, that’s because humans made this. The string that plays just a little bit off-tempo, the wrinkle in her nose, that’s because it’s human-made. The world is part of the message.”

In his earlier comments to Variety, Chu said that the second installment is structured as the concluding chapter of the first film. He said, “Once you see ‘Movie Two,’ you cannot forget it. It will always be tied to your movie one experience.”

The filmmaker noted that the sequel builds directly on the relationships, conflicts and developments introduced earlier. He explained, “It’s the moment where everything we’ve set up — the friendship, the heartbreak, the magic — comes crashing together.”

Wicked: For Good will release on November 21, 2025. The first installment, Wicked, premiered in 2024, introducing Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The film received ten Academy Award nominations.
