A Movie Based on Labubu Dolls Set to Become a Reality Soon

The studio has reportedly acquired rights to the brand and begun preliminary development on the project. At present, details about the creative team and format remain unknown.

Sony developing a Labubu dolls movie

Sony is moving forward with plans to adapt the hit Labubu doll line for the screen, marking the latest toy-to-film project in development at the studio.

The studio has acquired the screen rights to the brand and is exploring a potential franchise. However, as of now, the project is still at an early stage with no creative team attached. No decisions have been made about format, and the film could move forward as either live action or animation (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Labubu originated in 2015 when artist Kasing Lung created the characters as part of a series titled The Monsters. The dolls were first produced by How2Work before Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over manufacturing in 2019.

Pop Mart introduced the blind-box model of sales, a method in which buyers do not know which figure they are purchasing until the package is opened. The strategy fueled demand and helped create a resale market. Limited editions have become especially valuable, with some listings reaching extraordinary prices.

The brand’s profile expanded quickly across East and Southeast Asia before gaining traction in additional regions, including the United States. Visibility increased further when public figures, most notably Blackpink member Lisa, began featuring the dolls as fashion accessories. Pop Mart’s financial reports for 2024 and early 2025 reflect substantial revenue growth linked to the line.

Sony has not commented publicly on the acquisition. The project remains in early development with further details expected as the studio takes over the creative direction.
