Black Panther 3: Ryan Coogler Shares Best News for 3rd Marvel Sequel
Marvel fans finally have clarity on the future of Wakanda, as Ryan Coogler has officially confirmed that Black Panther 3 is moving forward. The filmmaker recently shared the update ending months of speculation about the status of the next installment in the blockbuster franchise.
What did Ryan Coogler say about Black Panther 3?
Ryan Coogler is returning to the world of Wakanda. During the Sinners panel at Deadline‘s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, the filmmaker told the outlet that he is deep into developing the next Black Panther movie. After spending time shaping his supernatural project Sinners —which follows a vampire hunt in the Mississippi Delta — Coogler is now steering his focus back to the MCU.
“If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny,’” Coogler joked when asked about the threequel. “But we’re working on it hard. … Yeah, it’s the next movie.” His confirmation follows earlier speculation started in late 2024 when Denzel Washington mentioned in an appearance on Today Show Australia that Coogler was “writing a part for me.” Coogler has since affirmed that Washington is indeed being considered for the film.
The Black Panther franchise began in 2018 with Chadwick Boseman leading the MCU’s introduction to Wakanda after debuting as T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Boseman continued the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
After his passing in 2020, Marvel Studios chose not to recast T’Challa, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) honoring his legacy and following Shuri (Letitia Wright) as she stepped into the mantle.
Days after Washington’s earlier remarks resurfaced, rumors grew around Damson Idris potentially joining the cast. When asked about the speculation on a show, Idris neither confirmed nor denied the talks. He acknowledged being in contact with Marvel Studios but clarified that such discussions “could still mean no.” Idris added that he would accept a role if offered.
All in all, with Coogler back in the director’s chair and momentum building around potential casting, Black Panther 3 is officially moving into active development.
