Fan-Favorite Shark Movie Franchise Gets Seventh Entry, First Details

The Asylum has officially announced the development of its seventh Sharknado movie. This comes after the release of The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time in 2018, which was actually meant to be the franchise’s final installment.

What do we know about the new Sharknado movie?

According to Variety, the movie will be titled Sharknado Origins. It will revolve around the younger versions of Fin and April, who were played by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid in the previous installments. The prequel will be directed by Anthony Ferrante, who is returning to the franchise after directing the first six installments. Production is expected to begin later this year, with the studio currently targeting a potential summer 2026 release.

“Sharknado Origins is set to introduce audiences to a teenage Fin and April. The two cross paths during a perfect beach summer, where sparks immediately fly. But just as Fin is about to seal the moment with a promise ring, the sky darkens, a massive funnel cloud forms, and sharks dramatically erupt from the ocean,” reads the movie’s description.

The action comedy horror franchise started in 2013. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the first installment gained a cult following. Because of this, it spawned five more sequels, including 2014’s Sharknado 2: The Second One, 2015’s Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, 2016’s Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, 2017’s Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, and 2018’s The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time. It also received a video game adaptation, as well as a one-shot comic book from Archie Comics. It hails from The Asylum, the production company also known for hit mockbusters like Z Nation and Ape vs. Monster.
