Now You See Me 3 Edges Out The Running Man in Box Office Update
The initial box office reports for The Running Man are rolling in. If Paramount‘s started planning a sequel, those ideas might need to be put on hold.
How did Now You See Me 3 and The Running Man perform in box office previews?
Per Deadline, The Running Man earned $1.9 million in Thursday previews across 3,000 theaters. That number should propel The Running Man to an opening weekend of over $20 million. Strong word of mouth could see it overperform, but it’s still too early to tell.
With a $110 million budget, The Running Man has some work to do at the box office to make its budget back and secure a sequel. Paramount is hoping The Running Man will have legs, especially with the Thanksgiving holiday in two weeks. Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 will likely dominate the Thanksgiving box office. The Running Man could be the perfect counterprogramming for those two sequels.
The Running Man is in a tight race with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t for box office supremacy. The magician heist movie pulled in $2.1 million in Thursday previews, putting it in line for an opening north of $20 million. It’s too close to call as to which movie will be No. 1 by Sunday. However, Now You See Me 3 and The Running Man should beat the second weekend of Predator: Badlands, which is projected to earn below $20 million.
The Running Man is an adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. Glen Powell stars as Ben Richards, who, in desperate need of money, participates in The Running Man game show, where runners are hunted for 30 days. If they escape death and survive, they can win $1 billion, but Ben quickly finds out that the gamemakers do not want him to live.
Edgar Wright directs The Running Man from a screenplay he co-wrote with Michael Bacall. Arnold Schwarzenegger famously starred in the 1987 feature film adaptation of The Running Man.
The Running Man is now in theaters.
