Avatar 3 Runtime Update Confirms 1 Detail Shared by James Cameron
The official runtime for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third entry in James Cameron’s hugely popular and successful Avatar film series, has been revealed. Notably, the theatrical cut of 2009’s Avatar has a runtime of 2 hours and 41 minutes. Meanwhile, the theatrical cut of Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2022, has a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes.
Avatar: Fire and Ash has longer runtime than Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: Fire and Ash has a theatrical runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, according to AMC Theatres. This makes it the movie with the longest theatrical runtime in the Avatar franchise. The update is in line with what Cameron said in multiple interviews.
In a March 2025 interview with Empire, Cameron stated that the third movie will be longer than the second one. In a separate interaction several months later, he mentioned that Fire and Ash would be three hours long.
While speaking about the Great Leonopteryx or Toruk (a massive flying animal native to Pandora), Cameron said, “I got a big scoop here. It [Toruk] didn’t exist in Fire and Ash. And I went, ‘Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.’ Come on! I was saving it for a later film. I was like, ‘F— that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk.’ There’s something in Jake’s destiny that requires it, right? So I just re-wrote it, and we went back and we shot two or three scenes around that concept, and I threw some stuff out and stuck that in. And we’re at three hours, big surprise!”
The Oscar-winning filmmaker added, “But it works beautifully, and the actors were super-excited about that idea.”
Cameron penned the screenplay for Avatar: Fire and Ash with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story they developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The movie premieres in theaters on December 19, 2025.
