Anne Hathaway’s Hit Animated Movie & Sequel To Stream on Netflix

Netflix expands its December lineup with the return of two major animated titles. As part of the month’s new additions, Netflix will stream Anne Hathaway’s hit animated film and its sequel. The titles join a packed slate of upcoming releases spanning multiple genres for the holiday season.

Rio and Rio 2 will stream on Netflix in December

According to What’s on Netflix, the 2011 animated musical comedy Rio and its 2014 sequel Rio 2 will arrive on Netflix in the United States on December 1, 2025, as part of the platform’s new monthly lineup.

The announcement appears in the publication’s early preview of December releases, which also includes Mean Girls (2024), Emily in Paris Season 5, and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The addition marks the first time both Rio films will stream on Netflix in several years following their previous runs on Disney+.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha and produced by Blue Sky Studios, Rio follows Blu, a domesticated Spix’s macaw voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, who travels to Brazil to meet Jewel, voiced by Anne Hathaway.

The film grossed $483.9 million worldwide and earned a 72% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics praising its “colorful visual palette, catchy music, and funny vocal performances.” It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, “Real in Rio.” The film’s success led to the release of Rio 2 in April 2014.

Rio 2 continues Blu and Jewel’s story as they venture into the Amazon rainforest with their children. Returning cast members include Hathaway, Eisenberg, and George Lopez, joined by Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth.

The sequel grossed $498.7 million globally and received a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting its “bright, noisy, overstuffed sequel” approach while audiences awarded it an A grade on CinemaScore. Both films remain among Blue Sky Studios’ most commercially successful titles prior to its closure in 2021.

Rio and Rio 2 begin streaming December 1, 2025, on Netflix US.
