Highlander’s Dave Bautista Explains Why the Henry Cavill-Led Movie Got Delayed
With the upcoming Highlander reboot having undergone numerous delays, actor Dave Bautista has shed some light on what is keeping the movie from materializing. In a recent interview, Bautista mentioned that even though he is unaware of all the reasons that have led to the delayed release of the Henry Cavill-led remake, one of them is the sudden change in studios.
Dave Bautista says change in studios delayed the Highlander remake
While speaking to MovieWeb‘s Joe Deckelmeier, the Guardians of the Galaxy star noted that Amazon MGM Studios’ acquisition of Highlander’s rights earlier this year significantly contributed to the delays in the film’s production.
“I would be speaking out of turn if I said I knew what the issues were, but obviously, what the public does know and what I do know is that they changed studios,” said Bautista. He further added, “That just changed the trajectory of everything because it just leaves everything up in the air. You start to lose your slot here and there, and everything that you already planned is completely shifted. Everybody’s contracts change, and then when you go to a new studio, they want to look at the script, and they want to pick it apart again, and then you’re getting notes from, like, 20 different executives. I imagine that had a lot to do with it.”
Notably, Summit Entertainment had originally purchased the rights to the Highlander franchise back in 2008. The company had reportedly planned to reboot the 1986 film with Ryan Reynolds as the lead, but the project never materialized. Ultimately, Amazon MGM Studios purchased the rights to the franchise earlier this year and sanctioned a remake with Henry Cavill playing the immortal Connor MacLeod.
In addition to changes at the executive level, another mishap that delayed work on the Highlander reboot was an on-set injury involving Henry Cavill. Nevertheless, the former Superman actor has started his recovery in order to meet the revised filming schedule. “He’s busting his ass to get healed up and come back and do it all over again, because that’s what professional athletes do,” Bautista said about Cavill’s commitment to the project.
