Weapons Director’s Sci-Fi Movie at Netflix Receives Disappointing Update

Fresh off the success of Weapons, director Zach Cregger is developing a new sci-fi movie, The Flood, for Netflix. However, Cregger’s movie recently received a disappointing update.

What happened to the Netflix sci-fi movie from Weapons director Zach Cregger?

After Weapons became a sensation, Netflix tried to court Cregger to direct the project. However, the two sides have now reached an impasse.

According to The Wrap, Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin visited Cregger on the set of Resident Evil to convince the filmmaker to direct The Flood. The Wrap’s sources say Lin “dangled a theatrical commitment.”

However, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly shot down the idea of a theatrical release for The Flood. With Cregger committed to releasing the film in theaters, The Flood has now stalled.

“The real question is whether Netflix backs down or they let Cregger take it out [to a different studio] because Zach remains committed to a theatrical release,” an undisclosed source told The Wrap.

However, another source stated that The Flood remains in “active development” and “talks are still ongoing.”

For years, Netflix remained adamant in its release strategy. Only prestige plays that could win awards received limited theatrical releases, while the overwhelming majority go right to Netflix. Now, the streaming giant is slowly allowing its projects to play in theaters.

KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s biggest movie of all time, played in wide release over the Halloween weekend. The Stranger Things Season 5 finale will be released in theaters on the same day as it streams on Netflix.

Next year, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia will be released in at least 1,000 IMAX screens for two weeks starting on Thanksgiving Day 2026 before its Netflix debut on Christmas.

Cregger’s Weapons became one of the biggest hits of the year, grossing $268 million worldwide on a $38 million budget. Sony will release Cregger’s next movie, Resident Evil, on September 18, 2026.

Cregger wrote The Flood for Amblin, Steven Spielberg’s company, which has a partnership with Netflix. Plot details remain under wraps.
