The Fantastic Four: First Steps Almost Had a Completely Different Score

The Fantastic Four: First Steps underwent some changes ahead of its reveal, according to one MCU director who also worked on the project.

What changes were made to The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

Speaking to Deadline, Michael Giacchino — who composed the score for First Steps and also directed the Disney+ special Werewolf by Night — revealed that he actually had to rewrite basically the entire score for the movie after seeing the film with his original score.

“I actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won’t ever hear,” Giacchino said. “I just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn’t feel right.”

According to Giacchino, he wrote the original score prior to principal photography starting. By the time filming began, Giacchino revealed he had already finished the themes for Galactus and the Silver Surfer.

“What was really fun was [director] Matt [Shakman] took that to the set,” said Giacchino. “It was helpful to them to figure out oh, that’s the movie we’re making. This is the tone. It’s so rare to do that. I think anyone who’s making movies should hire the composer first and then have them write their suite because then they can all get on the same page on day 1.”

The cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps is led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The film also includes Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer. Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne have been cast in undisclosed roles.

“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family as they face their most daunting challenge yet,” the official synopsis for the movie reads.

Kevin Feige serves as a producer on the project, while executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Grant Curtis, and Tim Lewis. Mitch Bell is a co-producer, while the music comes from Michael Giacchino.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is available to watch now at home.
