New Russell Crowe World War II Movie Gets Good Reviews & RT Score

Nuremberg, the new historical drama film featuring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, has garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, resulting in a favorable score on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, the movie is an adaptation of Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.

What critics are saying about Rami Malek and Russell Crowe’s Nuremberg

The critical response to the film has been predominantly positive. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, it primarily revolves around the interaction between Russell Crowe’s Hermann Göring and Rami Malek’s Douglas Kelley in post-war Germany.

Here’s what critics are saying about Nuremberg:

USA Today’s Brian Truitt wrote that the movie “leans entertaining.” He added that even though Nuremberg “gets deadly serious exactly when it needs to, the film hinges on the matching of wits between Rami Malek as an Army psychiatrist and Russell Crowe as one of the most evil men in the world.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Creith of TheWrap noted that the movie benefits from Crowe’s “terrifying performance” in the “larger-than-life role like those that defined the early part of his career.”

Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter also gave Nuremberg a glowing review. Besides praising Crowe and Malek’s performances, he lauded Michael Shannon’s portrayal of lawyer Robert H. Jackson, calling him “equally effective in the role of the steadfast lead prosecutor.”

Furthermore, Collider’s Ross Bonaime commended Crowe’s “terrifyingly brilliant performance,” but not before observing that even though the movie does “stick” with the audience, “the problem is that two hours of film precedes this, without moments that hit nearly this hard.”

However, Owen Gleiberman of Variety gave Nuremberg a negative review, stating the movie failed to explore the “nature of evil” through Göring’s relationship with his crimes.

Nuremberg gets decent Rotten Tomatoes score

Nuremberg currently has a 73% approval rating on the review-aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes, after 55 reviews.

This number is likely to change when the movie releases and more professional reviews become available. Moreover, the audience’s response upon release will contribute to its overall score.

Nuremberg had its world premiere at this year’s TIFF on September 7, 2025. The movie comes out in US theaters this Friday.
