Brie Larson talks being hesitant to play Captain Marvel at first

Brie Larson recently opened up about her initial hesitation to play Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking at SpaceCon San Antonio in October 2025, the actress revealed that she initially struggled with the idea of taking on such a high-profile role. She said, “I was offered the role of Captain Marvel, and I was really nervous about saying yes to it, and I literally sat down with a piece of paper and wrote down why it made me so scared to say yes.”

Larson went on to share her concerns about the impact the role could have on her privacy and everyday life. She explained, “I was really an introvert, and I was very worried about all the things that would come after. I was worried about lack of privacy.” The actress added, “I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to have a voice or be…I’d have stage fright doing something like this.” She was also worried about letting other people down.

To overcome those fears, Larson focused on establishing a balance between her public career and personal life. She stated, “And I was able to say, ‘Okay, well, I know when this movie is coming out. I got a couple of years. So that gives me three years of a runway to figure out what matters to me in my life, what I’m going to protect, what’s going to be private for me.”

Larson ultimately accepted the role, debuting as Carol Danvers in 2019’s Captain Marvel.
