Star Trek 4 Gets Devastating Update for Chris Pine Movie
The latest Star Trek 4 update at Paramount will disappoint many fans who hoped the franchise could return for a fourth outing.
What is the new Star Trek 4 update?
According to Variety, the new Paramount regime, led by David Ellison, hopes to make a new Star Trek movie. The movie will be a new Star Trek adventure, not a continuation of the J.J. Abrams movies with Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, and the rest of the reboot cast.
“The hope is to have a fresh Star Trek movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot,” the Variety report reads.
Star Trek 4 has been in development for nearly a decade. Following the release of 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, plans for a fourth Star Trek film began, with J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay penning the script. For the next few years, multiple directors, including S.J. Clarkson and Noah Hawley, joined and left the project. Quentin Tarantino even pitched and wrote a script for another Star Trek movie, but nothing ever came to fruition.
In 2021, Matt Shakman signed on to direct Star Trek 4 for a planned 2023 release. In 2022, Paramount announced that Pine, Saldaña, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Karl Urban would return for Star Trek 4. Shakman eventually left the Star Trek project to direct The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Star Trek 4 has been in limbo ever since Shakman’s departure.
The latest Star Trek 4 update came from Pegg, who expressed optimism that Ellison would resurrect the film.
“I’m hoping now that David Ellison is now high up at Paramount,” Pegg said in August. “Now the merger’s happened, and David’s always been a big supporter of the Kelvin timeline. So who knows, maybe we’ll get to make another one.”
If Variety’s report holds, the Kelvin timeline concludes with three films: 2009’s Star Trek, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
