Ocean’s Eleven Prequel Finds Its Villain in Oscar Winner
Margot Robbie‘s upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel has received a major casting update. Warner Bros. has found the actor who’ll play the movie’s main antagonist.
Besides Robbie, the untitled project will star Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper, who has replaced Ryan Gosling as the male lead. This would have been Robbie and Gosling’s reunion project, following the massive success of the live-action Barbie movie.
Who is playing the villain in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel?
According to Nexus Point News, Academy Award winner Benicio del Toro has reportedly entered negotiations to join the cast of the Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Further details about his character are still under wraps, but he’s expected to play the villain. Although Del Toro didn’t appear in the previous Ocean’s Eleven movies, he has been a frequent collaborator of the heist franchise’s creator Steven Soderbergh after working together in 2000’s Traffic and 2021’s No Sudden Move.
The prequel will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters, Minari). The story will reportedly take place in 1960s Europe. The movie will be produced by Robbie’s LuckyChap production company. Production is expected to begin sometime next year.
When the project was first announced, a previous rumor suggested that the movie might center around Danny (George Clooney) and Debbie’s (Sandra Bullock) parents. However, it’s still unclear if this is still the case, especially when the project has seemingly gone through some changes. Besides Gosling, Meet the Parents and Bombshell director Jay Roach was originally attached to helm the project.
In the early 2000s, Soderbergh directed the remake of Ocean’s Eleven, which also featured a star-studded ensemble led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. The franchise currently has a combined worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office.
