Frank Grillo & Maria Bakalova’s New Sci-Fi Movie Gets First Details

Frank Grillo (The Purge, Peacemaker) and Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) have signed on for the leading roles in the upcoming sci-fi survival thriller, titled Override. This marks Grillo and Bakalova’s first live-action project together, after starring in last year’s DC Universe animated series Creature Commandos.

“The film follows a futuristic soldier (Bakalova) who is left for dead. But with the help of a synthetic angel (Grillo), the latest in battlefield A.I., she must fight against the clock to survive a mortal wound,” reads the initial synopsis.

What do we know about the new sci-fi movie Override?

Override is being directed by Jordan Downey, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jackson Murray and Kevin Stewart. The “pulse-pounding thriller” had just begun its production in Belfast. The movie is produced by James Harris for Tea Shop Productions, with Captstone financing the project.

Grillo most recently played Rick Flag Sr. in James Gunn’s Superman movie and Peacemaker Season 2. He is expected to reprise the DCU character in the 2027 sequel Man of Tomorrow. Override also serves as Grillo’s latest collaboration with Downey, as they’re also currently working on the upcoming horror thriller The Cycle, which is now in post-production.

Bakalova is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, after previously voicing the character of Cosmo the Spacedog in 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At the moment, the Bulgarian star is also attached to star in Apple Studios’ action-adventure movie Mayday with Ryan Reynolds. She is currently in production for the thriller movie Double Blind, which will also be led by LaKeith Stanfield.
