Henry Cavill Returns as Superman in Zack Snyder’s New Photo
Zack Snyder revisited his time with DC’s Superman by posting a new image of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel. The director shared the behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram. The post reignited attention toward Cavill’s portrayal years after his final appearance in the role.
Zack Snyder posts new Henry Cavill Superman photo
Zack Snyder posted a previously unseen photo of Henry Cavill as Superman, captioned “Henry in his natural setting.” The image, shared on Instagram, shows Cavill’s Superman on a filmstrip, believed to be from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder’s post marks another addition to his recent series of behind-the-scenes DC film shares.
The filmstrip reflects Snyder’s preference for shooting Man of Steel and Batman v Superman on traditional film. His continued release of archival material comes years after Cavill’s exit from the role and the conclusion of the Snyder-led DC Extended Universe.
Snyder has publicly praised Cavill’s portrayal since casting him. At the 2013 Man of Steel premiere, he said: “Well, first of all, he’s not horribly ugly. And he wasn’t in bad shape. And then, he’s a great actor, but he also has this other thing, this kind of earnest awesomeness that is unexplainable.” Producer Deborah Snyder recalled Cavill’s screen test: “The clincher was our suit wasn’t ready, and we were doing a screen test, so we put him in the old Christopher Reeve suit. He put it on, stepped out of the trailer, and everyone was in awe of him” (via EOnline).
Cavill’s Superman appeared in three major DC films—Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017), including Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). He briefly reprised the role in Black Adam (2022) before DC’s leadership change.
James Gunn later confirmed that Cavill would not return, explaining: “It was really unfair to him, and it was a total bummer. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it.”
Superman will next appear in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, set for release on July 9, 2027.
