Netflix Making The Great Gatsby Movie With a Huge Twist
Netflix is teaming up with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Stephen Gaghan on his next directorial feature, Valley of Ashes. It is described as a loose and modern adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. It was famously adapted for the big screen by director Baz Luhrmann in 2013, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.
What do we know about Netflix’s The Great Gatsby movie?
According to Deadline, Netflix executives were reportedly blown away by the Syrian director’s pitch for his Great Gatsby movie. Because of this, they immediately grabbed the opportunity to acquire the project before it went to market. Further details about its story are still under wraps, but the movie is expected to center around Silicon Valley.
The movie will be written and directed by Gaghan, who will also serve as a producer through his Super Emotional production banner. The project will also reunite him with producer Jennifer Fox, after previously working together in 2005’s Syriana movie. Gaghan is best known for writing the script for Steven Soderbergh’s 2000 crime drama Traffic, which won him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Besides Syriana, he also previously directed 2002’s Abandon, 2016’s Gold, and 2020’s Dolittle.
The original novel takes place in the Jazz Age on Long Island and follows the story of Nick Carraway, a bond salesman who becomes friends with his enigmatic and self-made millionaire neighbor Jay Gatsby. Due to his obsession with reuniting with his former lover, Gatsby holds extravagant parties and shows off his wealth to rekindle their romance despite Daisy’s marital status.
