The Conjuring: Massive Update Reveals Next Movie After Last Rites’ $487 Million Success
After The Conjuring: Last Rites earned nearly half a billion dollars at the box office, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema seem to be wasting no time in expanding the supernatural franchise. A new prequel is in development, with an award-winning filmmaker reportedly in talks to direct.
The Conjuring prequel in works with director Rodrigue Huart
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit, The Conjuring prequel has been greenlit by New Line following the massive success of Last Rites, which earned over $487 million globally. Short film director Rodrigue Huart is in discussions to helm the project, making it his first major studio feature.
Huart gained attention in the horror community for his acclaimed short Transylvanie, which won the Midnight Short Jury Award at SXSW 2024. His other works, Trigger and Real, both premiered at Fantasia 2024 and explored found-footage horror blended with digital storytelling. Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures also picked up his script for Suffer Little Children, a modern reimagining of the 1976 Spanish movie Who Can Kill a Child?, with Walter Hamada attached as producer.
Hamada’s continued association with Huart may have played a part in his potential selection for The Conjuring prequel. As an executive producer, Hamada has been instrumental to the franchise since its inception, contributing to hits like The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Nun, and others.
The Conjuring: Last Rites was the final one for Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film, directed by Michael Chaves, played out the Smurl haunting case and ended the Warrens’ storyline on a high note, both narratively and financially. So, with Last Rites marking the end of an era, the franchise now shifts its focus to expanding its mythology through prequels and spinoffs.
If Huart comes on board, this will be the first Conjuring Universe movie since 2019’s Annabelle Comes Home not helmed by Chaves, which can be a creative refresh for the series.
