Jon M. Chu reveals if audience will see Dorothy’s face in Wicked: For Good
Jon M. Chu discussed one of Wicked: For Good’s key creative choices in PEOPLE’s special issue. The director confirmed that audiences will not see Dorothy Gale’s face in the sequel. The film releases in theaters on November 21. “I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with,” Chu said, explaining the decision to keep the focus on Elphaba and Glinda’s journey. He added, “She is a pawn in the middle of all of it.”
The sequel, directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, continues the story from Wicked: Part One. It brings back Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The film also features two new songs by Stephen Schwartz: “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble.” Its events align with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film adaptation. The story explores how Elphaba becomes the enemy of Oz and how Glinda rises in public favor as the “Good Witch.”
Chu also confirmed the inclusion of “an iconic moment we all know from our youth,” referencing the tornado that sends Dorothy to Oz. “We have this amazing moment of the tornado and how it gets conjured, which is not in the show, really,” he said. Other narrative changes include a wedding between Glinda and Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, and a new origin story for Elphaba’s sister Nessarose. Costume designer Paul Tazewell said Glinda’s gown features digital butterflies inspired by Billie Burke’s jeweled choker from the 1939 film.
Wicked: For Good ends Chu’s two-part musical adaptation and expands Oz with new songs, striking visuals, and richer character arcs.
