DC Actor on Why He Is Not in Marvel’s Blade Movie Anymore
A DC Universe star has explained why he exited Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot. The actor reflected on his brief time attached to the project and revealed that shifting creative plans ultimately led to his departure.
DC’s Aaron Pierre on what happened with his Blade role
Aaron Pierre revealed that his departure from Marvel Studios’ Blade was due to creative changes within the project. “I remember being cast in Blade and feeling elated,” he told Men’s Health. “But something I learned during that time was that until you step foot on the set, you haven’t commenced work. It just took a different creative direction, and I was no longer a part of it. You have to accept that.”
Marvel announced the Blade reboot at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and has since delayed and rewritten the film multiple times. The studio shifted its release date from November 2023 to several later dates before eventually removing it from the slate. Writers and directors, including Beau DeMayo, Nic Pizzolatto, and Eric Pearson, revised the story repeatedly, moving its setting between the 1920s and the modern day.
Frequent creative changes prompted several cast members, including Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo, to leave the production. Mahershala Ali leads the film as the Daywalker, and Mia Goth plays the villain Lilith. Marvel has not announced a new release date for the project.
After departing Blade, Pierre joined the DC Universe to play John Stewart, the first Black Green Lantern, in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns. Under showrunner Chris Mundy, the series pairs Pierre with Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, focusing on the relationship between two generations of Lanterns. Pierre said the character embodies “strength and fortitude” and stressed his commitment to portraying him with authenticity and accountability.
Blade remains in development, while Lanterns will feature Pierre’s first major appearance in the new DCU lineup.
