Power Ballad gets summer 2026 release date
Lionsgate has officially scheduled John Carney’s upcoming musical comedy Power Ballad, starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, for release on June 5, 2026. Carney directs and co-writes the film, with Peter McDonald serving as both co-writer and co-star. According to Deadline, the project will open opposite Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Warner Bros.’ Animal Friends.
Rudd plays Rick, a past-his-prime wedding singer who befriends Danny, a fading boy-band star portrayed by Jonas. After a late-night jam session, Danny transforms one of Rick’s songs into a hit that revives his career, prompting Rick to fight for the credit he believes he deserves. The movie explores friendship, ambition, and self-worth through music.
The ensemble cast includes Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor, and Sophie Vavasseur. Carney announced the production in May 2024 and filmed it in Dublin. Reynor joined the project later that month, and Liu followed in June. Yaron Orbach handles cinematography, while Stephen O’Connell oversees editing.
Anthony Bregman, John Carney, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole produce the film under 30West, Likely Story, and Treasure Entertainment. They collaborated closely with Screen Ireland and additional production partners throughout development. The United States and Ireland co-produced the project, and Lionsgate will distribute it globally.
Power Ballad joins Lionsgate’s upcoming release slate, which includes I Wish You All the Best on November 7, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t on November 14, and Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua, on April 24, 2026.
