Superman’s James Gunn Explains Why DC Sits Out of Comic-Con

James Gunn recently addressed DC Studios’ absence from major fan conventions, clarifying why the studio chose not to participate in events like San Diego Comic-Con. He explained his approach to balancing large-scale promotions with more direct, cost-effective communication methods.

James Gunn on why DC Studios isn’t hosting Comic-Con panels

In an interview with New Rockstars, James Gunn explained why DC chose not to participate in events like San Diego Comic-Con. He clarified that DC’s participation in such events depends on specific circumstances, stating, “I think it’s a case-by-case basis… Sometimes you really benefit from going to Comic-Con and spending millions of dollars and selling an idea, especially when you have a great trailer.”

Gunn explained that large-scale panels are not always the most practical or efficient choice. “Other times, I post a picture of the cover of the screenplay on Instagram for zero dollars, and it is equally effective; it gets just as much press,” he said. The Superman director emphasized that every promotional decision must balance impact with cost. Gunn noted that convention appearances often require significant time and financial investment.

Time constraints also influence Gunn’s approach. “The hard thing for me is I just don’t have much time,” he shared. “I live in Georgia, I’m gonna fly out to Comic-Con for these days that could be spent doing another draft of Man of Tomorrow… What matters to me at the end of the day is quality,” the DC Studios co-CEO further stated. His comments indicate a focus on completing creative work over pursuing traditional marketing showcases.

Since 2020, studios have debated the value of convention presentations, weighing the benefits of multimillion-dollar Hall H events against the reach of direct social media updates. Fans have urged DC to bring back FanDome, the digital event that offered global access to DC announcements.

For now, Gunn appears committed to sharing project updates through online posts and smaller press engagements.
