Scarlett Johansson Responds to Live-Action Tangled Movie Rumors

Scarlett Johansson recently responded to rumors that she was being eyed to star in the upcoming live-action Tangled adaptation from Disney.

What did Scarlett Johansson say about the live-action Tangled movie?

Speaking to ET in a recent interview, Johansson was asked about the rumors that she would be playing the role of Mother Gothel in the live-action film that’s currently back in development. The star joked that “anything is possible,” but then said that she’d be excited to work with director Michael Gracey if the job came to fruition.

“Is there a real possibility? I think anything is possible,” said Johansson. “What would excite me about it would be the opportunity to work with Michael Gracey, who is attached to direct the film because he is absolutely an extraordinary visionary and any actor would love to have a collaboration.”

In Tangled, Mother Gothel is loosely based on Dame Gothel from the fairy tale Rapunzel, and is the one who kidnapped Rapunzel and kept her isolated in a tower for eighteen years. In the 2010 animated movie, Mother Gothel is played by Donna Murphy.

Originally released in 2010, Tangled is loosely based on the iconic tale of Rapunzel, first found in the collection of folktales from the Brothers Grimm. The story follows Rapunzel, a princess with magical blonde hair, as she escapes her tower with the help of the outlaw Flynn Rider. The two then embark on a rollicking romantic adventure.

The original film starred Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Tambor, Richard Kiel, M.C. Gainey, and Paul F. Tompkins. It was a massive hit for Disney, earning more than $590 million at the global box office and becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing films of 2010. Since its release, a short film and television series based on the project were also released.
