I Play Rocky: First Look at Anthony Ippolito as Sylvester Stallone Revealed
The first look at Anthony Ippolito as Sylvester Stallone in the upcoming I Play Rocky movie has been revealed.
I Play Rocky is a forthcoming film about the making of 1976’s Rocky. Directed by Peter Farrelly, the Amazon MGM Studios project is currently in production and sees Ippolito portray Stallone, the actor who famously plays Rocky Balboa in the boxing franchise.
Amazon MGM Studios has now shared an official first look at the movie, which can be viewed below, on Instagram. The caption reads, “Production is underway for I Play Rocky, starring Anthony Ippolito. The film tells the true story of Sylvester Stallone and his unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky, he was meant to be Rocky Balboa.”
What else do we know about I Play Rocky?
Per Variety, I Play Rocky will depict a 29-year-old Stallone when he “was a struggling actor with a partially paralyzed face and a speech impediment. He wrote the script to Rocky but refused to sell the rights unless he got to play the lead. After turning down six-figure deals, he got the movie made for under $1 million. An ultimate underdog story, Rocky became that year’s biggest box office hit and eventual Oscar best picture winner. After cementing its place in Hollywood history, the original Rocky spawned several sequels as well as the Creed spinoff series.”
The cast of the movie also includes Stephan James as Carl Weathers, as well as AnnaSophia Robb, Matt Dillon, P.J. Byrne, Tracy Letts, and Jay Duplass.
Farrelly is producing alongside Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha, while Peter Gamble wrote the screenplay. Farrelly previously directed 2018’s Green Book, 2022’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever, and 2024’s Ricky Staticky, along with segments of 2013’s Movie 43. He also directed a number of movies with his brother, Bobby, before that, including 1994’s Dumb and Dumber, 1998’s There’s Something About Mary, 2001’s Osmosis Jones, 2012’s The Three Stooges, and more.
A release date for I Play Rocky has not yet been announced.
