Sleeping Dogs: Video Game Movie Gets Exciting Update From Simu Liu
Simu Liu took to social media to share an exciting update on the status of the Sleeping Dogs video game movie over the weekend.
What’s the latest update on the Sleeping Dogs movie?
In a recent post on X, Liu shared a photo of himself and his dog lounging on the couch alongside a screenshot of the Sleeping Dogs script. The reason for the post, Liu revealed, is that they were celebrating the screenplay for the movie being finished.
In a follow-up reply to insider My Time to Shine, Liu expressed optimism in the film being made. When asked how it was working with Square Enix (who published Sleeping Dogs in 2012), Liu said they’ve been “great,” but it’s the studios who have been troubling to deal with.
“They’re absolutely great it’s the studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is but we will get them there.”
Originally released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Sleeping Dogs was developed by United Front Games and follows the story of Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American police officer and martial artist who goes undercover to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organization.
The game was often compared to other open world action titles like Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row, but was praised for its combat systems, voice acting, and authentic representation of Hong Kong. A film adaptation was originally announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star. However, that fell apart, with Yen saying earlier this year the film was no longer in the works.
“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights, . . . I waited for years,” Yen said at the time. “Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately . . . I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, onto better things.”
