Hulk: Mark Ruffalo Gives Disappointing Update on Solo MCU Movie

Mark Ruffalo doesn’t seem to think that a Hulk solo MCU movie is ever going to happen.

Ruffalo has played Hulk/Bruce Banner in the MCU since 2012’s The Avengers. He’s since appeared in a number of other Marvel Studios projects, including 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and more.

There hasn’t been a movie solely focused on Bruce, however, since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, where the character was played by Edward Norton. This is largely because of some complicated legal rights issues between Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures.

What did Mark Ruffalo say about a Hulk solo MCU movie?

Speaking with GQ, via GamesRadar, Ruffalo said, while he’d love the chance to be in a solo Hulk movie, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen, at least in the immediate future.

“I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel. It’s a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly,” he said. “We keep talking about it, what it would be. There’s been so many Hulk movies already, it’s like, does anyone really want another one? But I’d love one, and I do think the audiences would be into it if we could crack the nut of it.”

In the meantime, it is known that Ruffalo’s Hulk will appear as a supporting character in Marvel and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man 4, also known as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Plot details for the film, which is currently in production, remain under wraps at this time, meaning it’s not clear how large of a role it will be. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan/Scorpion, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Marvin Jones III, Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman make up the rest of the cast.

Spider-Man 4 hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
