Why Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Director Wants to Satisfy Fans, Not Critics
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 director Emma Tammi revealed why she wants to appeal more to the FNAF fanbase rather than film critics.
In 2023, Tammi directed Five Nights at Freddy’s, a film adaptation of the famous video game series. The film followed a troubled security guard played by Josh Hutcherson who takes up the night shift at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. But things quickly go awry when the animatronics inside come to life.
The film opened to negative reviews from critics, earning a 33% “Rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with its dedicated fanbase, Five Nights at Freddy’s quickly became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie, earning $297 million at the box office on a $20 million budget.
What did Emma Tammi say about FNAF critics?
ComingSoon caught up with Tammi at New York Comic Con, where she responded to the critics of the 2023 film.
“I think the reception that we were more interested in looking at was the fan base,” says Tammi. “The critics sometimes are with you, sometimes they’re not. And it’s like an impossible endeavor to try to satisfy them. So I think doing that is maybe a bit of a lost cause we were just focusing on trying to make a great film that we all were excited about, and that we thought the fan base would really dig.”
The sequel is set to see the return of cast members Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Matthew Lillard, and Theodus Crane, while also bringing in new cast members Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, and Freddy Carter. Also announced at Comic Con were the additions of Kellen Goff as the voice of Toy Freddy, Megan Fox as the voice of Toy Chica, and renowned FNAF theorist MatPat as the voice of Toy Bonnie.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 releases in theaters on December 5, 2025.
