Heat 2 Gets Exciting Release Date Update From Michael Mann

Michael Mann revealed an exciting update regarding the release date for Heat 2.

What is Heat 2’s release date update?

Mann is currently at the Lumière Festival in France. While speaking at a masterclass, Mann shared a promising note about Heat 2.

Per Deadline, Mann said that “negotiations were ongoing” for his highly anticipated action sequel and that he hopes to shoot the film in 2026. If Mann shoots Heat 2 in 2026, the earliest it would come out is late 2027. However, Mann is a meticulous director who takes his time in post-production, meaning a 2028 release date is on the table.

Mann’s last film, Ferrari, wrapped in October 2022. The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2023 before heading to theaters a few months later in December.

Heat 2 started as a 2022 crime novel written by Mann and Meg Gardiner. It is a prequel and a sequel to 1995’s Heat. The globe-trotting novel follows three timelines: 1988, 1995–1996, and 2000. In 1988, the book explores the origins of Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and Vincent Hanna. The 1995-1996 timeline picks up in the aftermath of Heat, with Vincent hunting Chris in Los Angeles. In 2000, Vincent investigates a murderer from his past while Chris runs security for an international crime family. Vincent and Chris will eventually cross paths again in Los Angeles, setting the stage for one last showdown.

In 2023, Heat 2 was announced as a movie in development. Mann hoped to release the film by 2025 in honor of Heat’s 30th anniversary. In March 2025, Mann submitted his first draft to Warner Bros. Reports surfaced of a budget clash between Mann and Warner Bros., leading to a delay in casting.

Earlier this month, United Artists, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, acquired the rights to finance and distribute Heat 2. Mann, Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbit will produce. Shane Salerno and Eric Roth will executive produce.

For casting, Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to play Chris Shiherlis. Adam Driver, Austin Butler, and Bradley Cooper have all reportedly met with Mann for the project. No formal offers have been made to the talent.
