Wicked: For Good Director Teases ‘Wild’ Role for Surprising Actor

Wicked: For Good director Jon M. Chu says the actor they cast as the voice of the Cowardly Lion will blow fans’ minds.

Wicked: For Good hits theaters next month from Universal Pictures. A sequel to 2024’s Wicked, the film adapts the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. The movie is once again directed by Chu and will see Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their respective roles as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland.

What did Jon M. Chu say about the Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good?

Those familiar with the Wicked musical know that Wicked: For Good will introduce some faces who are familiar to The Wizard of Oz fans, such as the Cowardly Lion. Per Deadline, Chu isn’t ready to reveal who is voicing the beloved character in the new sequel movie just yet; he did, however, tease that it will be someone very recognizable and surprising.

Chu said that he messaged this unnamed star on Instagram asking if they wanted to be part of the movie.

“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you.’ He was like, ‘Why the f—k not, let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines,” Chu said. “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.”

As for the rest of the cast, Wicked: For Good also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, and Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Dulcibear.

Wicked: For Good arrives on November 21, 2025.
