Mattel Studios Head on Why New He-Man Movie Is ‘a Perfect Compliment to Barbie’
Mattel Studios’ upcoming Masters of the Universe film has reached a major milestone as production moves closer to completion. The development comes amid new comments from studio president Robbie Brenner, who revealed details about visiting the movie’s massive set and watching an early director’s cut during MIPCOM Cannes 2025.
Robbie Brenner recalls visiting Masters of the Universe’s ‘massive’ set
During her headliner session at MIPCOM Cannes 2025, Mattel Studios President Robbie Brenner recalled visiting the set of Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe adaptation, describing it as the largest production she has ever worked on. “I went and visited the set last year, and out of all the movies that I’ve worked on in my entire life, even Barbie, it was the biggest,” Brenner told The Hollywood Reporter. “It was massive. I think we took over two or three sound stages. This was on eight back lots… [Characters] walking around that are eight-feet tall. There are these crazy characters in this movie,” she added.
She confirmed that she recently viewed a director’s cut of the film and praised the scale of the production. “I just actually got to see a director’s cut of the movie,” she said. “That will be our second theatrical movie… I think it’s a perfect compliment to Barbie. I think people are going to be so excited. It is so much fun and feels so different,” Brenner further stated.
Masters of the Universe, directed by Travis Knight, stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba and is slated for release in June 2026 through Amazon MGM. The film joins Mattel’s expanding lineup that includes Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and Barney. Following the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which grossed over $1.4 billion and earned eight Oscar nominations, Brenner said the company now faces “incredible opportunity with all of this IP.”
MIPCOM Cannes 2025 runs from October 13 to 16, spotlighting global entertainment leaders and new franchise developments across television and film.
