The Matrix Star Pitches Himself for Iconic X-Men Movie Role

At New York Comic Con, Matrix star Laurence Fishburne surprised fans by revealing his interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Professor X. During the panel, the actor opened up about wanting to play Charles Xavier in the upcoming X-Men reboot, spurring cheers from fans.

Laurence Fishburne wants to play Professor X in X-Men reboot 

Laurence Fishburne has expressed an interest in stepping into one of Marvel’s most iconic roles. 

Speaking during a Matrix reunion panel at New York Comic Con, he revealed that he would like to play Professor Charles Xavier,  also known as Professor X, in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. He said, “I know that they’re talking about the X-Men now. So, at this point, I want one of two things. The first thing would be: what do you think about Laurence Fishburne as Professor X?” (via EW)

His question was met with loud applause and cheers from fans, with moderator Josh Horowitz immediately responding, “Approved. Greenlit!” Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy previously portrayed Professor X in the films produced by 20th Century Fox.

When asked about other potential roles, Fishburne admitted he was open-minded. He said, “I don’t know, I’m gonna let you guys decide. I can’t figure it out.” However, he was quick to dismiss any chance of joining the Star Wars universe. He said, “I’m watching everything. I’m watching every Star Wars, I’m in the middle of Rebels now, man. I’m good on the couch with Star Wars. I don’t need a lightsaber. I don’t — pew pew!”

Ultimately, Fishburne said his dream role is simply the next opportunity that comes his way. He has often said that when people ask about his favorite project, his answer is always “the next one.” Reflecting on his career, he noted that it has been more than two decades since The Matrix and expressed his willingness to work on unconventional projects.
