Popular R-Rated Video Game Movie Franchise To Become a Trilogy

Another Mortal Kombat film is said to be in development as the franchise prepares for its next chapter. While details remain limited, early signs suggest the studio is planning to expand the universe beyond the upcoming sequel.

Mortal Kombat 3 in works with Jeremy Slater potentially returning as screenwriter

New Line Cinema is developing Mortal Kombat 3, with Jeremy Slater in talks to return as screenwriter after writing and producing Mortal Kombat 2. Slater confirmed the project at New York Comic Con, announcing his return to write the next installment. Deadline reported that Warner Bros. remains confident in the sequel, which shifted its release from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026.

The red-band trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 reached 107 million global views within 24 hours of its July debut, setting a record for its category. Todd Garner will again produce the third installment. Mortal Kombat 2 producers also include James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and director Simon McQuoid, who helmed the first two movies. Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff serve as executive producers.

The movies adapt the Mortal Kombat video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in 1992. The story follows martial arts tournaments deciding the fate of realms like Earthrealm and Outworld, featuring fighters such as Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sonya Blade.

The 2021 reboot earned over $84 million worldwide despite its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release in the U.S. during the pandemic. Mortal Kombat 2 will have an exclusive theatrical run and expand the world introduced in the first film. Returning stars include Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. New cast members include Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford.

Slater’s credits include Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy, Death Note, Fantastic Four, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
