Get Carter 4K Review: Iconic Michael Caine Movie Looks & Sounds Great

The legendary Michael Caine recently retired after a 70+ year career in acting. Thanks to Warner Archive Collection, one of his most wonderful performances is preserved in stunning quality with the new Get Carter 4K release. One of the greatest British films ever made, it remains a fantastic gangster thriller and has aged remarkably well.

“Michael Caine gives a standout performance as vicious London gangster Jack Carter in this landmark crime classic from director Mike Hodges. The story begins as Carter travels to Newcastle for his brother’s funeral, where he begins to suspect that his brother’s death was not an accident and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit, cover-ups, and backhanders through Newcastle’s underworld, leading, he hopes, to the man who ordered his brother killed. Because of his ruthlessness, Carter exhibits all the unstopability of the android in Terminator, or Walker in Point Blank, and he and the other characters in the film are prone to sudden, brutal acts of violence. This timeless classic has been remastered from 4K scans of the original negative, with plentiful special features,” says the official description.

Michael Caine’s performance in Get Carter is simply superb. For younger cinephiles who haven’t seen the actor in his prime, it’s sure to be revelatory and to lead them down a rabbit hole of a career filled with interesting roles. What makes the film so interesting to rewatch is its coldness, as there’s a level of realism that is rarely matched. Throw in a superb score by Roy Budd and strong direction from director Mike Hodges, and you’ve got a film that has really stood the test of time.

The new Get Carter 4K from Warner Archive features Dolby Vision and is the same as the prior BFI Video release, which is a good thing since it was stellar there. It’s a wonderful transfer, with the clarity and color levels being fantastic. Nighttime footage looks superb, and it’s a beautiful disc with a great audio track, so it looks and sounds as good as it ever has.

The Get Carter 4K release features a wealth of bonus content, including two commentary tracks (one from 2000 with Mike Hodges, Wolfgang Suschitzky, and Michael Caine, and another from 2022 with film critics Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw). There’s also an hour-long conversation with Hodges about his career and the film, plus lengthy bonus features on actress Petra Markham, composer Roy Budd, and producer Michael Klinger. Throw in some other bonuses, such as several trailers and introductions, and you’ve got an extensive offering of informative special features.

Get Carter 4K Review: Final Verdict

Get Carter is an all-time great gangster movie. For fans of the genre or just those curious about seeing a younger Michael Caine in one of his greatest roles, the Get Carter 4K release is a total treat. It’s an easy recommendation and continues Warner Archive’s streak of putting out pure quality for its 4K releases.
