What do we know about Hamnet?

“Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet,” says the synopsis.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao is directing Hamnet from a screenplay she co-wrote with O’Farrell. The cast also includes Joe Alwyn as Barthomew, Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare, Olivia Lynes as Judith Shakespeare, Noah Jupe as Hamlet, Jack Shalloo as Marcellus, and David Wilmot as John, with Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet Shakespeare.

The movie is produced by Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes, and Steven Spielberg. In addition, Zhao is also an executive producer along with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Laurie Borg. Following its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival last September, the movie has received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds a Tomatometer rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 47 reviews.

This serves as Zhao’s feature directorial comeback, four years after working on Marvel Studios’ Eternals movie. She is best known for her acclaimed work on the 2020 drama Nomadland, which scored multiple major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand at the Oscars.
